The Dream Cup team showed up in full force to participate in the “Take a Step for Diabetes” 5k walk/run organized by the Diabetes Association of Barbados (www.diabetes.bb) on Saturday 9th to help raise awareness. The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) has named November 14th World Diabetes Day to bring focus to issues of importance facing the global diabetes community.
Diabetes now represent a most significant health care problem and the most important cause of mortality confronting the English-speaking Caribbean with approximately 27,000 known diabetics in Barbados, and if this trend continues, this figure may double by 2020. Recent figures suggest that diabetes and its related complications account for a huge burden of disease and debt much of which may be preventable.
As part of The Dream Cup’s Aspire to Inspire initiative, charities were specially chosen to align with this ethos. Along with the Diabetes Association of Barbados, The Dream Cup is also a supporter of The Precious Touch Foundation that grants wishes for chronically and terminally ill children and BIBA charity for their assistance with the public healthcare system in Barbados. Further information about these charities can be found on www.thedreamcup.com.
